Minn. girl hurt in freak pool incident

MINNEAPOLIS, July 4 (UPI) -- A 6-year-old Minnesota girl is recovering after having most of her small intestine pulled from her body by the suction of a swimming pool drain.

Abigail Taylor of Edina was in serious condition at a Minneapolis hospital Tuesday, The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Wednesday. She was injured Friday, apparently while sitting on an open drain hole in the wading pool at the Minneapolis Golf Club in St. Louis Park.

The girl was rushed to a hospital after she climbed out of the children's pool and then fell into a larger adult pool, chipping a tooth. Apparently the more serious injury wasn't discovered until she was at the hospital, the newspaper reported.

Doctors removed the remainder of her small intestine and she will require further operations, the newspaper reported.

"You don't think the filtration system will literally tear your organs from your body, and it's not a risk your child would understand," family attorney Bob Bennett said of the accident.

A club executive expressed sympathy for the family but said he didn't know there wasn't anything wrong with the pool. He referred questions the club's insurance company attorney, who declined to comment, the newspaper said.
