SAN DIEGO, June 24 (UPI) -- U.S. Border Patrol agents have arrested a truck driver after discovering 70 undocumented migrants being smuggled across the border from Mexico.
Authorities said the man's semi trailer was specifically designed for human smuggling, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The trailer reportedly contained a large freezer chest, cold soda, bottled water and a trapdoor to discreetly unload people.
Border Patrol agents received an anonymous tip Friday reporting a large number of people being loaded onto a truck in Tecate, near the border. About two hours later, the newspaper said, agents stopped a vehicle matching the description as it was trying to cross the border.
The driver reportedly appeared nervous. The police then found the migrants.
"This is one of the most sophisticated (semis) I've seen," said Gabriel Guerrero, a Border Patrol agent. "It was obviously equipped for a long trip."
Border Patrol inspectors have reported migrants being smuggled in washing machines and hollowed out car seats, the Union-Tribune said.
