Feds raid Oregon food processing plant

PORTLAND, Ore., June 13 (UPI) -- The same day President George Bush was working to revive immigration reform legislation federal agents were conducting a huge raid on an Oregon workplace.

More than 100 federal agents swept into a Fresh Del Monte food processing plant and the firm that supplied its workers Tuesday, arresting three managers and 167 employees, The Oregonian reports.

Federal officials say the raids at Del Monte and American Staffing Resources in Portland were part of a six-month criminal investigation of the employment agency.

American Staffing Resources, based in North Carolina, is accused of conspiring with Fresh Del Monte to hire and employ undocumented workers.

The government charges nine out of 10 employees hired by the staffing company use Social Security numbers that are fictitious or belong to other people.

An official at Del Monte headquarters in Coral Gables, Fla., declined comment on the raid until federal investigators provide the company with more information.
