Caller claims information on missing girl

MADRID, June 7 (UPI) -- A man who called police claiming to have information in the search for a missing English girl was convincing enough that British police alerted her parents.

But the caller, who initially got in touch with police via a prepaid cell phone, has not called again, The Times of London reported Thursday. Spanish police reportedly received the first call, although the Interior Ministry there has denied getting any serious telephone call.

Madeleine McCann, 4, disappeared from her parents' vacation apartment in the Algarve resort area of Portugal more than a month ago. Kate and Gerry McCann were eating dinner at the time in a restaurant within sight of the apartment after leaving their three children asleep in one room.

The McCanns have been traveling around Europe to raise interest in the search for their daughter. British police convinced them to delay their departure from Berlin to Amsterdam to give the man time to call them.

The McCanns said they believe their daughter was taken by an international pedophile group.

Police departments involved in the investigation and the couple have received hundreds of calls from people claiming to have information. Most say they have psychic powers, while one proved to be a disturbed English schoolboy.
