Elderly woman killed by ice cream truck

NEW YORK, June 4 (UPI) -- A 68-year-old grandmother on her way to church was struck and killed by a Mister Softee ice cream truck in New York.

Police said Adelaide Rodriguez was only a block away from her Pentecostal church, Caminando con Jesus (Walking with Jesus), on Saturday when a 41-year-old ice cream truck driver slammed into her, The New York Daily News reported.

"She never went anywhere except for church," said her goddaughter, Maria Rodriguez.

Witnesses said it is possible that the driver swerved to avoid a boy on a skateboard when he hit Rodriguez.

The driver was not charged with a crime, but police issued summonses for equipment violations and failing to yield to a pedestrian, the newspaper said.

Police said Rodriguez was pronounced dead on arrival at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.
