Bill Gates foundation donates $100 million

SEATTLE, June 4 (UPI) -- The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has donated $105 million to the University of Washington for a health institute at the Seattle school.

Experts say the grant to create the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation will help strengthen Seattle's growing reputation in health research, The Seattle Times reported Monday.

The university also is contributing $20 million to the institute. The combined money is supposed to launch and operate the center for 10 years.

Harvard professor and global health leader Chris Murray has been recruited to run the institute.

UW President Mark Emmert said Monday the institute will launch soon in existing university facilities with no immediate plans for a new building.

Mexico's former minister of health and senior fellow at the Gates Foundation, Dr. Julio Frenk, will also lead a board of international health experts who will guide the institute.
