Al-Qaida determined to build nukes

LUXEMBOURG, May 26 (UPI) -- Al-Qaida remains determined to create nuclear weapons for mass destruction, a former United Nations weapons inspector said in Luxembourg.

"Al-Qaida is searching for nuclear technology," said Rolf Ekeus, high commissioner at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and former director of the UN Special Commission on Iraq.

Ekeus, who spoke at an international convention on ways to prevent a nuclear catastrophe, said al-Qaida members are willing to sacrifice themselves to obtain nuclear material, Ynetnews reported

"Of the 130 research reactors (with enriched uranium), very few of them have adequate protection. If I were looking for nuclear weapons, I would know where to go," Ekeus said Friday, adding that steps were being taken to protect the reactors, and to make the uranium inaccessible.

William Perry, a former U.S. defense secretary, supported Ekeus saying there is more than a 50 percent chance that a nuclear terrorist attack will occur in a European city.
