LYNCHBURG, Va., May 23 (UPI) -- The Virginia family legacy of the late Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell has taken a new turn as his sons assume leadership of his university and church.
Falwell died last week at the age of 73 and was buried Tuesday with as many as 10,000 mourners in Lynchburg, Va., attending a memorial service at the Thomas Road Baptist Church, which he founded 50 years ago.
He was buried not far from his office at the 5,000-acre Liberty University, which he also founded in 1971, the Lynchburg News & Advance reported.
Falwell's only daughter, Jeannie, flanked by her two brothers, spoke for the family at the service.
With his father's death, Jerry Falwell Jr., became chancellor of the university, while the newspaper said his other son, the Rev. Jonathan Falwell, is expected to become the church's pastor.
