WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- A new poll says U.S. President George Bush's job approval ratings dropped to an all-time low after he announced support for a new immigration plan.
"The president's ratings have tumbled each time immigration reform dominates the news," said Scott Rasmussen, president of the Rasmussen Reports poll.
The poll found Bush's approval rating dropped to 34 percent, an all-time low for the Rasmussen Reports, the Washington Times said. Bush had an approval rating of 39 percent last year after he gave an Oval Office address detailing his plans for more border enforcement and giving illegal aliens a path to citizenship, Rasmussen said.
Immigration reform has been one of Bush's top priorities. In his weekly radio address Saturday, Bush said the bill drafted last week upholds the "great American tradition of welcoming those who share our values and our love of freedom."
The bill, scheduled to be debated in the Senate Monday, has polarized Congress. The legislation's fate could depend on whether senators view the deal as an amnesty for the estimated 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens living in the United States, the Washington Times said.
