Lawmakers try eating on food stamp budget

WASHINGTON, May 17 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., is taking the Food Stamp Challenge this week, spending $3 a day on food.

The national weekly average for food stamp recipients is $21, the Chicago Tribune said Thursday.

On Tuesday, Schakowsky had puffed wheat with milk and a banana for breakfast, a tuna sandwich for lunch, and Pasta Roni Alfredo and lettuce for dinner. Wednesday's menu included toast and a banana for breakfast, Pasta Roni and tuna for lunch and Rice-a-Roni with lettuce and tomato for dinner.

"I learned a lot just going to the grocery store," Schakowsky said in a statement. "It's not easy to eat on $3 a day. I can only imagine what shopping would have been like with small children, who, like all kids, want special treats. It's especially expensive to buy nutritious fruits and vegetables."
