Huge ice jam floods Russian villages

YAKUTSK, Russia, May 15 (UPI) -- A huge ice jam flooded the Lena River in the Russian Yakutia Republic, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,000 people.

The Ministry for Emergency Situations was attempting to break the ice jam, which also forced the evacuation of more than 200 head of cattle and horses, Itar-Tass reported.

The largest evacuation was in the highland village of Berdigestyakh, where 636 people had to leave their homes.
