Israeli lawmaker proposes moving weekend

JERUSALEM, May 14 (UPI) -- A member of the Israeli Knesset is pushing for the country's weekend to begin Friday night and end Monday morning.

The bill, proposed by Knesset Member Zevulun Orlev of the National Union-NRP party would make Sunday an official day of rest for the country and would turn Friday into a regular workday -- until sun down, when the Sabbath begins, YNetNews reported Monday.

"The idea's main purpose is to allow the religious and traditional public to use the day of rest to spend time with the family, something which is not possible for Shabbat (Sabbath) observers," Orlev said.

The bill would also loosen some restrictions on Sabbath activities by allowing services such as public transportation to continue unhindered during the day of rest.

However, all industry, trade and state institutions would be banned from any activity during the weekend.
