Reward grows for missing U.K. child

LONDON, May 12 (UPI) -- The reward is climbing to millions of dollars for the safe return of a Scottish girl who disappeared May 3 from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz.

The BBC reported Saturday that celebrities, the business community and a newspaper are offering 2.5 million pounds ($4.9 million) for information leading to the return of Madeleine McCann, who turns 4 this week. Her parents, from Scotland, will spend their daughter's birthday alone.

The News of the World, Sir Richard Branson and Scottish tycoon Stephen Winyard have contributed to the reward fund.

The BBC said nine suspects have been questioned in the past few days, but there remained no sign of a breakthrough in the disappearance of the child -- who may have been taken out of Portugal.

The latest information is that the search is focused on an international child abduction inquiry. Leads have surfaced in the way of surveillance video from a gas station that showed two men and a woman driving a car with a British license plate.
