DILI, Timor-Leste, May 10 (UPI) -- Nobel laureate Jose Ramos Horta says he wants to hear the final election results before claiming the Timor-Leste presidency.
With about 90 percent of the votes counted, Ramos Horta had 73 percent of the vote while Francisco Guterres had 27 percent, an election official said.
However, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Thursday Ramos Horta had refused to declare victory.
"I'm not ready to declare anything at the moment until I hear the final result and let the National Electoral Commission declare the winner," he said.
The Guterres camp remained silent on the latest figures amid concern supporters of the losing candidate may take to the streets and trigger fresh violence.
Australian-led troops and police units continued to maintain tight security in Dili and other populated areas of the Pacific nation.
