British girl rescued from forced marriage

LONDON, May 9 (UPI) -- An 11-year-old British girl was in foster care after being rescued from a forced marriage in Bangladesh.

The British Home Office said the child had lived in England with her father until he died when she was 6, and she moved to Bangladesh to care for her disabled mother, The Telegraph reported.

An aunt told British authorities she had been forced into marriage, and the British Foreign Office intervened and brought the girl back to England last month, The Telegraph reported.

The newspaper said the girl's case was disclosed by Home Office Minister Patricia Scotland as she announced a support network for victims of forced marriage.

"Forced marriage should not be happening in the modern world," Scotland told BBC's Asian Network. "It's not a respected cultural or religious tradition. Neither does it have anything to do with honor. There can be no honor in a marriage based on force and hostility."
