School district sued over free speech

ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 4 (UPI) -- A religious legal organization has sued a Southern California school district for removing banners from a classroom with phrases like "In God We Trust."

The federal lawsuit filed by the Thomas More Law Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., names the Poway Unified School District and a number of district officials as defendants, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The center says Brad Johnson, a mathematics teacher at Westview High School, had displayed signs in his classroom for more than 20 years with no problems, and claims that his freedom of speech is being curtailed.

Johnson's signs included: "In God We Trust"; "One Nation Under God"; and "All Men Are Created Equal, They Are Endowed By Their Creator."

Superintendent Don Phillips conceded that there had been no objections to the signs. But he said the district is becoming more sensitive to the separation of church and state.
