Va. Tech gunman was temporarily committed

BLACKSBURG, Va., April 18 (UPI) -- Virginia Tech University officials say Cho Seung-hui had spent time in a mental hospital prior to killing himself and 32 others in a shooting rampage.

Campus police said Wednesday that Cho had been hospitalized briefly after two female Virginia Tech students accused him of stalking them, The Los Angeles Times reported.

It was not known if Cho's hospital stay was on a mandatory or volunteer basis.

Individuals who knew the 23-year-old South Korean immigrant prior to the killing spree described him as an insecure loner.

Cho allegedly planned the rampage for weeks.

Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. Steven Flaherty told the newspaper investigators had not ruled out the possibility Cho may have had an accomplice.

"We are exploring whether or not there was someone who may or may not have helped Cho at any point during his planning or during his execution," Flaherty said.
