Lu says she is ready to lead Taiwan

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan, April 17 (UPI) -- Taiwanese Vice President Annette Lu said Tuesday she is ready to become president as she has a clear vision about the island's sovereignty and future course.

Speaking in Taiwan's second largest city of Kaohsiung, Lu sought public support to help her get elected next year as the nation's first woman president, the Central News Agency reported.

She said her three party primary rivals from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party -- Premier Su Tseng-chang, party Chairman Yu Shyi-kun and former Premier Frank Hsieh -- are only bickering among themselves over who leads in opinion polls.

Lu said as vice president she has been campaigning for gender equality in which Taiwan ranks at the top in Asia and 19th in the world, the report said.
