Sinking of cruise ship prompts charges

ATHENS, Greece, April 7 (UPI) -- The sinking of a cruise ship off the coast of Greece has led to negligence charges against its captain and five other officers.

Sky News reported that the six officers are being held responsible for the Sea Diamond running aground near the Greek island of Santorini on Friday, resulting in the evacuation of more than 1,500 passengers and crew.

While no deaths have been linked yet to the sinking of the Greek-flagged cruise ship, a 45-year-old man and his 16-year-old daughter were still missing, the report said.

The cruise officers are being charged with violating regulations dealing with international shipping safety, environmental pollution and causing a shipwreck to occur through negligence.

Meanwhile, a school official from Britain's Henley College told Sky News that the 33 teenage students involved in the incident are doing fine and returning home.

"They are in quite good spirits," assistant principal Peter Hill said. "They've been given some Euros to spend because they lost all their clothes."
