SAN DIEGO, March 29 (UPI) -- The FBI agent in charge in San Diego, under fire for coming to the defense of dismissed U.S. Attorney Carol Lam, has decided to retire.
Dan Dzwilewski announced Wednesday that he is becoming director of security at Sempra Energy, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. He leaves the bureau April 30.
Dzwilewski -- who has been with the FBI for 27 years and has headed the office in San Diego since 2003 -- said publicly that Lam's departure would set back investigations into official corruption. FBI Director Robert Mueller told the Senate Judiciary Committee this week that he had warned Dzwilewski that his comments were inappropriate.
Lam's best-known case was her successful prosecution of former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., for taking gifts from defense contractors.
The FBI refused to comment on Dzwilewski's retirement. The newspaper said people close to him say he had been planning to retire in San Diego and has been job hunting for months.
