WASHINGTON, March 25 (UPI) -- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, under fire for the firings of eight U.S. attorneys, received another show of support from his boss, President George Bush.
The president, in his weekly radio address Saturday, again defended Gonzales and the decision to remove eight U.S. attorneys last year. Bush accused Democrats of attempting to "waste time and provoke an unnecessary confrontation" by seeking sworn testimony from White House aides about the dismissals.
Bush's speech was recorded before it was disclosed late Friday that the attorney general and his staff talked about final plans for the firings at a Nov. 27 meeting, well before Gonzales has previously stated he was aware of the details.
Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said the revelations further damaged Gonzales' credibility with Congress, The Washington Post reported. "A good lawyer will tell you, when the story keeps changing, it's usually because someone has something to hide," Schumer said.
