Officers blamed in Tillman death errors

WASHINGTON, March 24 (UPI) -- Mistakes made after the "friendly fire" death of former NFL football player Pat Tillman in 2004 will be placed on nine officers, including four generals.

In a report expected to be released Monday, the U.S. Defense Department's inspector general is not expected to recommend specific punishments for the yet-to-be named officers, The New York Times said Saturday. But the report by acting Inspector General Thomas F. Gimble concludes the officers violated regulations and used poor judgment in the aftermath of the corporal's shooting death during a battle in Afghanistan, an official told the Times.

Tillman left the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Tillman's fellow Rangers were found to have made errors during the firefight but not of a criminal nature.

His family complained about the handling of his death and three prior investigations into it.

The Army, which requested the review, said in a statement that it "plans to take appropriate action after receiving the inspector general's report." A criminal investigation into the handling of the aftermath of the incident by the Army Criminal Investigation Command is still under way.
