Saddam's former VP hanged in Iraq

BAGHDAD, March 19 (UPI) -- Saddam Hussein's former vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan was executed before dawn Tuesday for crimes against humanity.

Sky News reported that Ramadan was hanged for his role in the deaths of 148 Shiites in the town of Dujail, Iraq, in the 1980s.

He was found guilty late last year of issuing orders for the "systematic detention, torture and killing of men, women and children" from Dujail following an assassination attempt against Hussein, Sky News said.

Ramadan, who claimed innocence, had said his government duties were limited to economic affairs.
