HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 20 (UPI) -- The Zimbabwe High Court ordered the release of an opposition leader who was arrested as he tried to leave the country.
The High Court ruled that the weekend arrest of Arthur Mutambara at the Harare International Airport violated another High Court ruling that set free dozens of political activists, New Zimbabwe reported.
Mutambara is a leader of the Movement of Democratic Change. He was among several opposition leaders arrested at a prayer rally last month. Some of those arrested were allegedly beaten in custody, including two women who were also prevented from leaving the country over the weekend and remained hospitalized in Zimbabwe, New Zimbabwe reported.
Justice Tendai Uchena said Monday that Mutambara was free to travel. But MDC spokesman Gabriel Chaibva said a police officer confiscated Mutambara's phone and passport and fled, New Zimbabwe reported.
