Thai officials detaining massacre suspects

PATTANI, Thailand, March 17 (UPI) -- Officials at an army camp in Pattani, Thailand, have detained 14 suspects who may have been involved in the brutal massacre of eight civilians this week.

Area authorities detained the 14 suspects, mainly young men, in connection with Wednesday's brutal slaying of eight civilians who were traveling through the city of Yala, a senior police force told the Bangkok Post.

Army Chief Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin said such instances of insurgent violence could cause authorities to implement more curfews.

The general, head of the Council for National Security, recognized the inconvenience such efforts would cause to the area population.

"People have to travel and make a living. So, we're trying to minimize any inconveniences we might cause," Sonthi said.

The Post said Wednesday's deadly attack pushed the rising death toll from insurgent violence in south Thailand to 2,135 since a separatist attack back on Jan. 4, 2004.
