9/11 mastermind admits to Pearl slaying

WASHINGTON, March 15 (UPI) -- Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who masterminded the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, said he personally executed journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002 in Pakistan.

The Pentagon Thursday released a transcript of Mohammed's confession.

"I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan," CNN quoted the transcript as saying. "For those who would like to confirm, there are pictures of me on the Internet holding his head."

The admission came in a wide-ranging confession before a U.S. tribunal at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in which Mohammed claimed responsibility for the planning of numerous terrorist attacks, including Sept. 11, the assassination of several U.S. presidents and the destruction of landmarks like the Sear's Tower in Chicago, the Panama Canal and London's Big Ben, CNN said.

The Pearl admission initially was removed from the transcript because of its graphic nature. Pearl, 38, was taken hostage in Pakistan in January 2002.
