Racial slur scrawled on hotel mirror

PEORIA, March 13 (UPI) -- The mother of a Chicago high school basketball player says a racial slur was scrawled across a mirror in her central Illinois hotel room.

A sales manager at the Pere Marquette Hotel in Peoria, Ill., told the Chicago Tribune the message became visible only when the mirror was steamed.

Ruth Wilson, whose son plays for North Lawndale High School, discovered the message after getting out of the shower while staying at the hotel last weekend for the state Class A basketball tournament.

The newspaper said the North Lawndale team is made up entirely of African-Americans.

Vonachen Services, which provides housekeepers for the hotel, says it has interviewed all the housekeepers who had serviced the room recently.

"We feel terrible," Vonachen Vice President John Austin told the newspaper.

The hotel and the Illinois High School Association are investigating the incident.
