Palestinian unity government to be formed

GAZA, March 14 (UPI) -- Palestinian officials said after a meeting between leaders of the Fatah and Hamas movements that a unity government will be announced by the end of the week.

Nabil Abu Rudeina, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, spoke after a Tuesday meeting between the Fatah leader and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, Alalam reported Wednesday.

"We are in the final moments before the formation of a government of national unity, which will be announced between now and the end of the week," Rudeina said.

"There are still difficulties to overcome, particularly with respect to the ministry of the interior, but the discussions were serious and positive."

Ghazi Hamad, a spokesman for the interim Palestinian government, said Abbas and Haniya will meet again later in the day, the Kuwait News Agency KUNA reported.

"Today's meeting is to pick up from where the two men left off last night in Gaza. They are expected to put the final touches for the Palestinian government," Hamad said.
