Officials resign after lawmaker killings

GUATEMALA CITY, March 8 (UPI) -- Three Guatemalan security officials have resigned amid an ongoing investigation into the deaths of four police officers, Prensa Libre reported Thursday.

The country's national police chief, security minister and head of Guatemalan prisons all resigned after the officers -- implicated in the killings of three El Salvadoran lawmakers and their driver -- were killed while in custody.

Last month the bodies of three politicians from El Salvador in a car in Guatemala's capital, La Prensa Grafica reported Tuesday.

The body of their driver also was found with the politicians in their charred and bullet-ridden vehicle.

The three Salvadoran lawmakers -- Eduardo D'Aubuisson, William Pichinte and Jose Ramon Gonzalez -- were also members of the Central American parliament.

D'Aubuisson was the son of the late founder of El Salvador's ruling Arena Party, Roberto D'Aubuisson.
