HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 3 (UPI) -- An official in Zimbabwe has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle diamonds out of the country.
William Nhara, principal director in the ministry without portfolio, was arrested at the Harare International Airport, The Herald reported.
"We confirm that he was arrested on Thursday at Harare International Airport in connection with illegal possession of diamonds," Assistant Police Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena told The Herald. "He is also alleged to have attempted to bribe a police officer when he was arrested."
Bvudzijena would not say what was the value of the diamonds Nhara is alleged to have attempted to smuggle. Police sources told The Herald that when Nhara was arrested, he was with a Lebanese woman who intended to take the stones to South Africa.
