Two Picasso paintings stolen in Paris

PARIS, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Police in Paris are investigating the theft of two Picasso paintings valued at more than $65 million from the apartment of the artist's granddaughter.

The paintings, "Maya with Doll," of the painter's daughter done in 1938, and "Portrait de femme, Jacqueline," his second wife and painted in 1961, were stolen early Tuesday, a spokesman for the family lawyer said.

"The paintings were taken at 4 a.m. We know it was then because someone heard a noise at that time," the spokesman said. "They only took the two paintings. There were other Picasso paintings there but they did not take them."

The Art Loss Register, which maintains the world's largest database on stolen and missing art, now lists 444 missing Picasso pieces, the Times of London reported Wednesday.

Register spokeswoman Antonia Kimbell said stolen major pieces usually sell for very little.

"It's unlikely a legitimate dealer would purchase or acquire any of these pieces," she said.
