Frigid weather blankets eastern U.S.

HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Cold temperatures froze the eastern United States Saturday as a Colorado avalanche buried a highway and kept skiers from the slopes.

In Pennsylvania, three interstates that had been closed for several days reopened. Gov. Ed Rendell called for an investigation of the handling of Wednesday's ice storm, which left hundreds of cars and trucks on the highways, The New York Times reported.

In Florida, temperatures in some areas were well below freezing. In Lake County, where tornadoes two weeks ago left hundreds of people homeless, the frigid weather was especially difficult.

Robert Hicks told the Orlando Sentinel he decided to move his family indoors instead of camping on the lot where their mobile home had been destroyed.

"We thought about staying out here this weekend," he said. "But with the cold, a tent just doesn't cut it for the kids."

In Colorado, highway crews used howitzers to cause avalanches on I-70 because of dangerous accumulations of snow. Traffic backed up for several miles.
