10 arrested after Jerusalem riots

JERUSALEM, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Muslim youths clashed with Israeli police in Jerusalem Friday in protest of Israeli renovations to the Temple Mount that houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

A total 10 youths were arrested for participating in riots after a speech given by Sheikh Raed Salah, the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Movement, who called Friday for an "intifada," or uprising, to save the Muslim place of worship, Haaretz reported. Four of the youths arrested are accused of attacking police officers in an attempt to reach the Temple Mount.

The rioters were dispersed with stun grenades, tear gas and water hoses, the Jerusalem Post reported. At least one of the rioters was injured.

"Israeli history is drenched in blood," Salah said. "They want to build their Temple while our blood is on their clothing, on their door posts, in their food and in their water."

Salah rejected a Thursday court ruling ordering him to keep a distance of more than 150 yards from the mount after he was accused of organizing demonstrations near the mount that turned violent last week, Haaretz reported.

"They have no right to make decisions on anything connected to the Al-Aqsa Mosque," he said. "I emphasize that I will enter the mosque at any time I think is right."
