Kidnapped cleric to sue Italy, U.S.

CAIRO, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- An Egyptian lawyer says that a Muslim cleric abducted in Milan in 2003, allegedly by the CIA, is planning to sue both the United States and Italy.

Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr is "recovering with his family in Alexandria" after his release Sunday by an Egyptian court, his lawyer, Montasser al-Zayat, told the Washington Post.

Nasr, also known as Abu Omar, could be charged with terrorism in Italy if he returns, the report said. Italian courts are also considering whether to bring formal charges against U.S. and Italian intelligence officers allegedly involved in his kidnapping.

Zayat said that Italian lawyers have been hired to bring suit in Rome. He said one lawsuit would be against former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi for allegedly approving the kidnapping.

"Abu Omar will be filing a suit against the U.S. and Italian administrations to seek damages for his kidnapping, his moral and financial losses and his excruciating personal and psychological torment," he said.
