JERUSALEM, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A top cleric from Israel's Islamic Movement has been arrested on charges of assault and public disorder over last week's riots at Jerusalem's Temple Mount.
As part of an indictment recently handed down by the Jerusalem Magistrates' Court, leader of the Islamic Movement Sheik Raed Salah and four other Arab Israelis were charged by authorities for their involvement in the riots at the famed religious site, YNet News reported.
The court's indictment alleges that all five men attempted to enter a Temple Mount construction site last Wednesday and in the ensuing riots, assaulted a police officer.
Salah allegedly was one of the riots' key coordinators, ordering some of his accomplices to block traffic by sitting in the street as part of their opposition of the ongoing construction at the site.
Meanwhile, protests continued at the construction site on Monday as a group of young Arabs began throwing stones at cars.
YNet News said that the protesters' efforts, that also included the use of Molotov cocktails in East Jerusalem, resulted in three people being injured.
