Israel mum on Palestinian agreements

JERUSALEM, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Israel is neither accepting nor rejecting Hamas and Fatah agreements made at a meeting Thursday in Saudi Arabia, a report says.

The Jerusalem Post reported on Sunday's Cabinet meeting in which Prime Minister Ehud Olmert spoke about Israel's stance toward a unity Palestinian government.

"Israel insists that all of the Quartet's demands are met, as they were presented in the past," said the prime minister, referring to demands that the Palestinian Authority accept the existence of Israel and renounce terrorism.

The Quartet consists of the United States, Russia, the United Nations and the European Union.

Despite consultations over the weekend, Olmert said his government had not yet made a decision.

Earlier in the day, officials in Jerusalem warned that Israel would cut ties with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas if the Quartet demands were not met.

The Post reported that officials are also worried that the Hamas-Fatah national unity government agreement reached in Mecca could jeopardize a trilateral Israel-Palestinian-US meeting scheduled for next week.
