Lawyers in Duke case happy with change

DURHAM, N.C., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Defense lawyers in the Duke lacrosse rape case said after a meeting Tuesday with North Carolina prosecutors they are happy to be dealing with professionals.

down and engage us in conversation," Joseph Cheshire, who represents David Evans, said. "We are excited that we are now engaged in a professional process."

The lawyers also said that a hearing scheduled for Feb. 5 has been postponed because the North Carolina Attorney General's Office needs more time to review the case, the Raleigh News & Observer reported.

Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong asked the state to appoint a special prosecutor after the North Carolina State Bar initiated an ethics proceeding for public comments on the three Duke lacrosse players charged with a sexual assault on an exotic dancer during a team party. Defense lawyers also criticized Nifong for refusing to meet with them when they said they had exculpatory evidence.
