Nations mark Holocaust Memorial Day

LONDON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Britain and many other countries are marking Holocaust Memorial Day to remember the 6 million Jews and other victims killed by the Nazis.

Most of the events will take place Saturday, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, the largest of the concentration camps, by the Soviets in 1945, the BBC reported.

Holocaust Memorial Day was established in 2001 to create a lasting memorial to the people who perished in the concentration camps; and the date, Jan. 27, was set by the United Nations in 2005.

Britain is using the message "The Dignity of Difference" this year, educating people about the dangers of anti-Semitism, racism and all forms of discrimination.

Other victims of atrocities in the 20th century, including Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Kosovo, are being honored as well.

The U.N. General Assembly also adopted a resolution Friday condemning Holocaust denial.
