Prince Charles arrives in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Britain's Prince Charles and his wife arrived in Philadelphia on a commercial flight Friday afternoon, accompanied by a staff of 18.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were to be in the city until Sunday morning, when they are scheduled to leave on a private train for New York after church, KYW-TV reported.

Their itinerary includes a visit to Independence Hall, where American independence from Britain was proclaimed.

While 18th-century Philadelphians may have regarded George III as a tyrant, the city in the 21st century is excited about welcoming his descendant. Students at Moore College of Art and Design even prepared a sign in Welsh that says "Croesco i Philadelphia" or "Welcome to Philadelphia," The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The prince is in the United States to receive an environmental award. In Philadelphia, he and the duchess will also visit the Mural Arts Program and attend a reception at the Constitution Center.

Charles compromised by flying on British Airways after environmentalists criticized his plan to charter a jet and suggested he accept the award by video link to minimize the environmental impact.
