Shiite cleric returning to Iraq parliament

BAGHDAD, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr and his allies will return to the Iraqi Parliament, ending a two-month boycott, the parliamentary speaker announced Sunday.

Politicians allied with the anti-American Sadr stopped participating in Iraqi politics in November after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki met with U.S. President George Bush in Jordan, CNN reported.

At a news conference Sunday with supporters of Sadr, parliamentary Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani said the boycott ended after negotiations in which other members of Parliament said they would consider the Sadr bloc's demands, which include setting a timetable for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, CNN reported.

The Sadr bloc holds 30 of the Iraq Parliament's 235 seats. The group also has control of six government ministries, CNN said.
