Afghan suicide bomber thwarted in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Two civilian employees of the U.S. military base in Kabul stopped a would-be Afghan suicide bomber from driving his truck into the base, the military said.

The U.S. military said an unidentified security guard and interpreter, both Afghans, reacted quickly and yanked the driver from the bomb-laden truck before he could pull a cable to detonate the explosives, military spokesman Col. Tom Collins said.

"Anyone's inclination would have been to run away but these guys are genuine heroes," Collins said. "I think it's a pretty amazing and heroic event."

The area was evacuated, and the truck exploded during a disposal team's attempts to disarm it, but no injuries were reported, CNN said.

Collins said discussions would be held on how to honor the two Afghans who foiled the attack.
