Somalia's president supports U.S. strike

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Interim Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf says he supports Monday's U.S. strike against al-Qaida hideouts in Somalia.

Yusuf said al-Qaida terrorists have been using the country as a safe haven and a base for their operations for years, the Voice of America reported.

The VOA said the U.S. airstrike targeted several al-Qaida operatives involved in the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Yusuf says the same men were probably also involved in the 2002 bombing of an Israeli-owned hotel in Mombasa, Kenya.
