Czech president names coalition government

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Czech President Vaclav Klaus named a new center-right coalition government Tuesday in a bid to end a seven-month period without a stable Cabinet.

Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, leader of the rightist Civic Democratic party, will continue to lead a three-party coalition that includes the Christian Democratic party and the Green Party, Prague Radio said.

The new coalition government lacks at least one leftist opposition deputy for a majority in the 200-seat parliament.

Topolanek's Cabinet is to face a parliamentary vote of confidence within the next 30 days, the radio said.

Under pressure from officials of his Civic Democrats, Topolanek said he would step down as the party leader if he failed to win the confidence vote for his government.

The three parties agreed to form a coalition government Dec. 28, after Topolanek's minority government failed to win a confidence vote early in October.

General elections in June left the Czech parliament divided, with both rightist and leftist deputies winning 100 seats each.
