Gerald Ford laid to rest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Gerald R. Ford Wednesday was laid to rest on a grassy slope overlooking his museum in his home town of Grand Rapids, Mich.

The last in a series of services was held for the nation's 38th president at Grace Episcopal Church in East Grand Rapids.

Ford was eulogized by former President Jimmy Carter and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Thousands of mourners lined the route between the church and the Gerald R. Ford Museum in downtown Grand Rapids, including a Boy Scout troop that snapped to salute as the funeral cortege passed.

Overnight thousands more braved freezing temperatures to file past Ford's casket at the museum.

A military band played "America the Beautiful" as mourners walked to Ford's grave.

Vice President Dick Cheney presented the folded flag that had draped Ford's casket to a very frail former first lady Betty Ford, who was brought from the limousine to the grave in a wheelchair. Mrs. Ford, 88, kissed the flag as it was handed to her.

Cannon fire, a 21-gun salute and a fly-over by a missing-man formation preceded the interment.
