Times Square jammed by 1 million

NEW YORK, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Clean-up of New York City's Times square began early Monday after an estimated 1 million people noisily celebrated the arrival of 2007.

Although still recovering from a stroke, 77-year-old Dick Clark hosted his annual "New Year's Rockin' Eve," as revelers from around the world packed into the square, the New York Daily News reported.

As always, the highlight of the event was the countdown to midnight as all eyes watched the 1,070-pound Waterford crystal ball descend. A the stroke of midnight, a record 7,000 pounds of confetti was swirled onto the crowds from the surrounding high-rises.

"If you're not happy about this, you should see a psychiatrist," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said just midnight.

Hundreds of police officers were deployed throughout the crowd, searching bags, and bomb-sniffing dogs also were taken through the throngs as a police helicopter monitored the from overhead.

Partiers also got a break from the weather, with an unseasonably warm 45 degrees when the clock struck midnight.
