Pit bulls may be banned from New York

NEW YORK, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- New York City Councilman Peter Vallone has renewed his call that pit bulls be banned from the city.

Vallone on Wednesday called the dogs potentially lethal weapons, the New York Daily News reported.

"I am an animal lover," said Vallone. "But I have always thought they should not be allowed on our streets. They have been bred to be violent."

Dog experts told the Daily News said that aggression is a fault of the dog's owner and not the dog.

"We have to look at forcing people to be responsible pet owners," Mary Martin, executive director of Animal Care & Control said to the newspaper. "This is not the dogs' fault."

The councilman wants to make a change to the New York State Legislature, which would allow cities like New York, to ban specific breeds.
