Peru charges former President Toledo

LIMA, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A Peruvian judge has charged former President Alejandro Toledo with forging signatures and documents in connection with the 2000 presidential election.

Toledo, who is currently in the United States, has denied the allegations, El Comercio newspaper reported Thursday.

The former Peruvian leader left office in July and since then has been under investigation on several charges of alleged corruption and abuses of power.

Toledo's sister, Margarita, and two dozen supporters, are also being investigated and could face prison time if convicted.
