MILLVILLE, N.J., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- A veteran New Jersey police officer was arrested Tuesday and charged with killing his wife.
Sgt. Robert Vanaman, who has been with the department in Millville, a small city in South Jersey, for 15 years, also faces charges that include hindering the investigation and filing a fictitious police report, The Vineland News Journal reported.
Vanaman's wife, Barbara, was shot twice in the chest in May during an argument. The officer remained on the payroll but has not worked since the shooting, using accumulated vacation time and sick leave.
His lawyer, Joseph O'Neill, has said in interviews that Barbara Vanaman threatened her husband with a knife and cut him, causing wounds on his arms, and that he shot her in self-defense.
Bail was set at $750,000. Police Chief Robert Harvey said that Vanaman would be suspended immediately without pay.
