Clintons' NYC-area neighbors shot

NEW YORK, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- An upscale area near New York was reeling Monday from the shooting of two neighbors of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D.-N.Y. and former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Police said Carlos Perez-Olivo and his wife Peggy were driving to their rented luxury home in Chappaqua, N.Y., late Saturday night when another car forced them to stop and a gunman entered their vehicle. Perez-Olivo, 58, told police during a struggle, the gun went off, striking his wife in the head. It fired a second time, striking him in the abdomen and the gunman fled, he said.

He managed to drive to a hospital, and his 55-year-old wife was listed in critical condition Monday, WABC-TV, New York, reported.

Police said they had "no known motive" for the attack, but the New York Daily News said Perez-Silvo was disbarred in August for pocketing bail money of murder defendants and other violent felons.

The Secret Service prevented reporters from questioning the Clintons, who live two doors away in their house they bought for $1.7 million in 1999.
