Pope, cardinals to discuss celibacy rule

VATICAN CITY, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- No changes are expected to the celibacy rule for Roman Catholic priests after Pope Benedict XVI and his advisers meet at Vatican City to discuss the issue.

The pope and the cardinals are scheduled to discuss the case of a married African archbishop, who was excommunicated for ordaining married priests, the BBC said. Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, the former head of the Catholic Church in Zambia, was excommunicated for attempting to ordain four married priests as bishops in the United States.

Thousands of priests have left the Catholic church to marry.

Milingo established the group "Married Priests Now," and said he plans to sponsor a meeting of more than 1,000 married Catholic priests in New York next month.
